Ethan and Tristan are an established couple who moved to Australia (where Ethan is from) from England (where Tristan is from and Ethan was doing work). Ethan is embarrassed about his family, and has tried to keep Tristan away from them. It doesn't go well, because it's a lot of sneaking and avoiding. It was annoying (to me) that they have been together for so long and has avoided this subject for so long. Also,

it was annoying that it appeared that Tristan moved across the country to live with him, yet Ethan was surprised when Tristan said "love". Even if you don't say it, there are ways you know, and for Ethan to be so surprised, it was like he didn't even think Tristan loved him. It was a little thing, but it made me go "huh".

Hottest day of the year so far and I'm reading a Christmas story. At least it's set in Australia, so the weather is appropriate.
