amazing and beautiful story, brought up some heavy topics that my kids and I were able to discuss. Really loved this story.

Beautifully illustrated is a way that captures both the light and darkness of the world, and that is all inclusatory of both gender and race.

Even better though is a deep and complex portrayal of love snapshotted in the day to day from the fun, the marvelous, the mundane, and the heartbreaking...and even the journey back to living it. All this is a small children's book.

It's these kinds stories we need to be giving our kids. It's stories like this that give me tremendous hope for the next generation.

I can't quite put into words why I didn't like this. The illustrations were great, but the story itself was not satisfying and was too sappy I guess

Silly me. I had this book on hold for months at the library. When I picked it up, I anticipated a novel. But I found a thin picture book. Imagine that. A picture book on hold for months. But between the covers lies love. Love dressed as many cultures, socio-economic statuses, religions, neighborhoods. Love from disabled, elderly, police and fire personnel, street people. Love language inclusive of all. Beautiful, touching, sorrowful love. Own it. Don’t wait for months only to have to return it. Your shelf needs love.

Through faces, music, fun, sacrifice, struggle, and self, you can find the love that appears as attention, effort, and experience. It's a poetic take on living in the world.

January 2018 - the text is amazing and tackles all kinds of issues in a frank but gentle way, and these are the best illustrations I've seen from Long. But it's more impressionistic than an actual story and I wanted a tiny bit more cohesion.
