Well, from time to time I seek out the work of authors I've never read before, but keep hearing about and one of them is Tom Leins. I've seen his name and books mentioned at some of the blogs that often focus on hardcore noir (Unlawfulacts.net and Deadendfollies.com, to just name two).

Leins is often mentioned as a no holds barred, hardcore-noir writer that pulls no punches and that description is dead on.

Skull Meat is a good place to start, too (oddly, the book cover to his latest novella - Slug Bait - which is quite gruesome - is what finally pushed me to obtain writings by Leins).

In Skull Meat, Joe Rey, a degenerate private investigator himself, is hired by a female mob boss to gather information about a sex trafficker and the story goes downhill from there. Rey is a violent character that appears not to give a shit about much at all other than booze, kicking ass and some sex thrown in.

From reading just one novella by Leins it is clear his writing is not for everyone. But if you like your writing and storytelling raw, graphic and like a kick to the groin, then have at it.

Highly recommended for those not squeamish, easily offended and fans of rough and ready storytelling.
