Wow, wow, wow!

To read this book in a day makes me feel like I did it a disservice, as if I really needed to take my time with it. And yet, I also could not put it down.

As an Asian-American myself (Filipino-Chinese), I have never felt so heard and seen from each experience that Zauner had so deeply described. From going down the grocery isle and reading the ingredients off of a packaging, or listening in to conversations in a language that I have yet to learn completely; her love for her mother is so deep and relatable, it made me miss my own mom even more so despite being in the same house as her.

Struggling with my Asian-American identity didn’t come to me until my late high school years, I was privileged to have been included in a community, and grew up around people who were Filipino. And despite, later on that I struggled with if I was Filipino enough? It was my mom who kept our culture alive, and gods did it make me appreciate the life my mother gave me even more so. I cry thinking about this book, and hope to return to it again and again.

I’m so glad I finally picked this book up. Michelle Zauner tells her story in such a beautifully simple and frank way and then suddenly drops in a detail that guts you. I’m not sure it’s possible to read this book without getting emotional. The audiobook is read by the author and added to the emotional impact of the story as well. A tough read, but worth it.

Wonderful, touching story of grief, maternal love, third culture kids, and how the food we love connects all of it.

The very emotional tale of a woman's complicated relationship with her mother and how she navigated her mother getting cancer and passing away. I cried several times. It's also full of gorgeous descriptions of Korean food that make me want to visit Korea and eat everything.

Zauner’s memoir touches on her music career and the beginnings of Japanese Breakfast but the main focus is on the loss of her mother to cancer.

Zauner does not shy away from the difficult story of her mother’s decline and being the first line of defense and support as the cancer slowly takes her mother away. This memoir is phenomenal, heart wrenching, and beautiful. It was difficult to read at times from how bleak it is at moments, but Zauner’s prose and focus on moving on despite her loss is inspiring. I have been a fan of Japanese Breakfast for years but I am not also a dedicated fan to her as an author as well. Highly recommend reading and listing to Michell Zauner’s works!
