Definitely not the typical genre i normally gravitate towards. My friend forced me to read it as he gifted me the paperback for my birthday, lol. He loves this book apperantly. Well, my opinion is quite different than his as we see, lmao.

What is there to say about it that hasn't already been said by scores of literary critics, casual readers, and frantic students writing last minute papers? Possibly not much.

While I was reading Metamorphosis, I wasn't much impressed, except by the odd fit of humor every now and then (such as Gregor's concerns being primarily about how turning into a bug interfered with his work schedule, rather than about the fact that he turned into a freaking bug). It's only upon further reflection after finishing the book that it occurred to me that there was a lot to be said about a man who may or may not have turned into a giant bug. Stories about people turning into animals (or taking on the characteristics of animals) tend to be pretty heavy with meaning.

It could be a story about how capitalism causes us to put a value on things, about family, about madness, about what it takes to turn from concern to ingratitude, maybe about what it means to be human, about being burned out from the stresses of life, about all sorts of things, really.

I can see why this is often a selection in literary class. I'd love to have a discussion about it.

I thought The Metamorphosis was very depressing, but I also have a hard time finding humor in the absurdity of the everyday. It's thought-provoking and still relevant to modern work culture despite being published in 1915.
