Absolutely gut wrenching 😭

LOVED Krystle’s writing style and the use for foreshadowing throughout the book. Every time I thought something would happen, Krystle caught me off guard!

I had a love hate relationship with the protagonists, Efe especially, however, Rootless really displays the raw truth of being married as well as find your identity within and outside your relationship. Dark and brutal at times but genuine throughout.

I enjoyed learning about Ghana and Ghanaian culture and proverbs. And the deep message of forgiveness at the end of the book.

If you’re looking for your next book to read, look no further!

The cover of this book does not really match the story - it makes it seem like this will be a light read and it is not. That said, I really liked this book.
The book was heartbreaking and unexpected but I think also presented a realistic representation of relationships, families and parenting.
Would recommend but make sure you know what you're getting in for.

I really liked the characters and the split perspective. Kinda spoiler:
.
.
.
I called the ending and I was stressed about it for the last quarter of the book.

I listened to the audiobook version and as a Ghanaian i was stunned at the amount of mispronunciation and supposed “accent” of Efe and her family. You would think they will put more effort to get it right.

Anyway, this book had me frustrated at the lack of communication between Sam and Efe. It does a good job highlighting the pressure from families in Ghana on a young woman to get married and have kids and all the struggles that comes with that.

Also what was that ending omg?? i was so annoyed at how the book ended

I didn’t know anything about this book going in and I’m glad. This book broke my heart.
Efe was let down so badly by those around her. She spoke about her challenges and then she was robbed of her life just as it was finally beginning.
Life is a treasure and you have to hold on to the best parts of it.

The ending was so sad but it also was a bit of a cop out in terms of dealing with the main conflict of the novel. I think the discussion around not wanting to be a mother was good but could have had more nuance and complexity, same thing with Sam and his relationship was his mother
Just generally there was a lot of interesting plot events that could have been explored more, which is a pity

Rootless is an incredible book that I would recommend to anyone looking for a good dramatic novel about self-discovery and identity. I listened to the audio version of this book and thoroughly enjoyed it. This is a debut novel, which does not show in the complex web of this story. This story follows Efe, and Sam, a married couple trying to understand how life ebbs and flows, how life changes and how it can change you. Efe and Sam have to reconcile their separate and conflicting desires with their status as a family and married couple. Rootless is a beautiful story about enduring more than you think you’re capable of, learning how to ask for what you need and facing all of the unexpected that life brings. This book will break you and then break you again. This book does have themes of self-harm, abortion, and depression.

i didn't mind this book for the most part, but it really brought home how a bad ending can completely ruin your perception of a story
