While I thoroughly enjoyed many of the essays and found instances of connection with the writing, the last few essays were tough to get through. I still recommend that anyone who is interested in learning more about tenets of anarchism, socialism, and revolution check out these essays.

In terms of anarchist fundamentals, this book definitely covers some of founding ideas of anarchism. I found some of the essays to be profoundly moving, and excellent calls to action. In other essays, Emma Goldman would switch from counter argument to argument so frequently that it made it difficult to grasp where she really stood on certain points. Either way, I still did find this book incredibly eye-opening to arguments on the contrary to my beliefs that I haven’t considered.

Goldman is something of a dry writer and large swathes of this book felt very dated. She relies heavily on stereotypes based on race and gender in these essays-disappointingly so for an anarchist theorist.

Possibly the most formative book I've read in years. It's like Emma Goldman reached into my head, scooped out all my thoughts and assembled them on the page far more eloquently than I could imagine. I was so floored by how relevant this collection is to 21st century politics & society, given it was written over 100 years ago.

Goldman is not shy in her critique of society and she calls into question things like women's suffrage and religion, presenting the foundation for today's criticism of "nice white feminism". She is brazen and yet empathetic and I am just so impressed by her writing. One of my favorite books of the year.
