True to its Newbery award, this book truly touches the heart of my inner child. A beautiful story of a brother and sister who run away from home - he for the sake of devotion and adventure, she for the hopes of an experience to make her return a different person. ‘From the Mixed-up Files’ had me grinning the entire time, while also touching me in that profound way only children can. I will love this story forever and can’t wait for my boys to read it.

She died yesterday 4/20/13
NPR called Jamie Peter when they spoke about her and this book today (4/21) You'd think someone there would do the proper research because it's been at least 20+ years since I've read this and I knew they had it wrong, even out of the corner of my hearing.

I read this book as a kid and remember liking it a lot. Thus I decided to read it to my daughter. The format is interesting and quite different from most of its contemporaries. It was also different in that the kids, to a large degree, take control of their own fate and aren't merely kicked around by circumstance.

Upon rereading the thing that struck me the most was how dated the book feels know. With all of the advances in forensics, a new obsession with security in public venues and especially inflation since the book was first printed so long ago much of the work feels old. We live in such a different world from Claudia and Jamie now.

The pacing is a bit slow but the characters are vivid and memorable. As a kid I loved the mystery element of Angel but as an adult that plot point was just too simplistic to hold my interest. However, my daughter liked the book and that's what matters. I think this book is still great for its intended audience but it isn't one that crosses over into an adult market well and instead has an appeal mainly for nostalgia's sake.

This is at least the second reading for me. I’m not sure how many times I read it as a kid. Still really enjoyed it. I was prompted to pick it up again when it was mentioned in the summary for another book I am now reading- Essential Maps for the Lost by Deb Caletti. I love the writing style of both of these authors and can’t wait to see how she incorporates Mixed Up Files into this story. 😊

What can I say, I'm a sucker for nostalgia! This was one of my favorite childhood reads, and I have revisited the story a few times in adulthood. It is truly just as magical as always!
