What a fantastic, ambitious book. This novel, written in five distinct parts, grows in tension up until the great release of its final part. Brutality and the attempts to understand brutality, making peace with that which is impossible to be at peace with: Bolaño plums these depths with precision and mastery. The final two parts in particular are spectacular, horrific (this is one of the hardest, most gruesome books I have yet read). The payoff of the ending is sublime. When I first started this book, I didn't understand its neo-classic distinction; having finished it, I have been converted.

Good though maddening, hated it and everyone in it as much as I understand it’s a good literary work.

2666 is an immense, effective masterwork. Its difficult subject matter is perfectly embodied in the difficult form the novel takes; especially the middle section, which imposes the terrible, numbing enormity of femicide.

Bolano writes brilliantly and brutally. Tangled networks of motifs span the novel from beginning to end, and I'm sure I'll be puzzling through them for a while yet, though I will have to take pause before I return to his Santa Teresa.
