+half a point for finishing it, because I wanted to see if my prediction was right (it was). What a terrible combination of a podcaster’s wet dream to solve the Jon Benet Ramsey case and a cheap knockoff of Sharp Objects. Take a pass on this one.

A page-turner that had me hooked from the beginning and kept surprising me until the very end!

This one had me hooked! Really well done for a debut novel. This is one instance where the author did a great job of weaving the past and present into the narrative. And it definitely kept me guessing! Most of the time, I was highly suspicious of multiple people - it wasn't overly obvious to me which is a WIN for a mystery.

Would’ve given this a five, except that I was frustrated by the ending. Storytelling was well done. All throughout the book, I had more information than any of the characters at any point in the story, but still, there were multiple red herrings to get through. And even though I had parts figured out in advance, including what really happened that night, which was only revealed at the very end, I was frustrated because there were multiple time lines, and the present time line was too abrupt for me.

I enjoyed the book and I liked the twist at the end, but god, that ending was so unfulfilling. I don't want the author to say, "Here, the ending is unfinished so you can make it up!" That feels lazy and unsatisfying. Blegh. I am disappointed. The writing was overall very good and engaging, but I just kept looking at the amount I had left and thinking, "surely not, surely there's more, right????"

I added content warnings because I generally don't read books that have children injured or killed, so I'm not sure why I picked this one.  I didn't realize the extent the book would cover the children's death. That doesn't have anything to do with the 3.5 stars, its just my warning to other readers.  Despite the above, I did keep reading and enjoyed the book.  For me a 3 is ok, a 4 really good and I personally withhold 5 starts for something really special or something that touches me.   I did have the who of the of one of the twists figured out, I just didn't know the way.  And I knew the who & why of one of the other murders as soon as it happened.  So 3.5 stars because it was a good book, good storyline but I wasn't wowed.  Would recommend to others with the content warning ahead of time.

I really enjoyed this book. Even when I thought I had it figured out, it kept me guessing. I found the main character really likable and relatable. I definitely recommend reading this book!

Ashley Flowers has written what she knows: small town Indiana and (fictional) true crime.

It kinda feels JonBenet Ramsey murder fanfiction. But, since that's an unsolved murder with several theories, I guess it's reasonable to fictionalize it.

The double narrative, the twists, the turns, the epilogue... It all came together well. I enjoyed reading it. I didn't loooove it probably because I felt detached from the characters, and that's okay.
