The first half was amazing and I was engaged throughout the whole book.  I  found myself frequently googling terms often. As it’s a culture I don’t have much exposure to, it was fascinating to read about the rich history, people, culture, etc,.

However, the last arc was a bit of a slog for me personally due to how depressing it was. Keep in mind I read the last half of the book in a single sitting tho.

I actually did like how the protagonist was unlikeable because it’s not something I often see in books. The outrage at some of his actions means I was emotionally invested (even if it was through anger) with what the character would do next.

But yeah would recommend it tbh just check trigger warnings because it gets very dark and heavy at parts.

This book broke me a thousand times over. Just when I thought nothing could be more devastating, I was wrong.

This is a book I think everyone should read, but I don't want to recommend it to anyone because of how emotionally shattering this book is. I don't really have a lot of words, I don't know how to process everything in this book or how to go on without knowing more past the ending.

This was my first book by Khaled Hosseini and it will not be my last-- though I think I may need something a little more lighthearted after this book. 5 Stars because I sobbed through the entire thing and that's not something easy thing for a book to do to me.

"For you, a thousand times over."

I'm not going to lie... this was a difficult read for me. Not because the writing was poor or because the book as a whole wasn't exceptional, but rather because of some of the subject matter discussed. I found my heart dropping and tears springing to my eyes quite a few times and wanting to slap Amir for not being a better friend in the first half. I will say, though, it is definitely an eye opener to this particular culture and is worth a read if you can stomach some of the lows throughout.

I think I can officially say this is the best book I have ever read. Obviously I like different books for different reasons, but I have never been so moved when reading before. This book transported me and transformed me (I know that's cheesy but after reading this I don't have the capacity to care about being cheesy). You will definitely cry. The characters feel so real and vivid from the first description of them. Amir is such a fascinating protagonist. I LOVE HASSAN was the main sentence I said whilst reading this book. I will always love Hassan! The writing is immaculate. The world Hosseini creates is so immersive. Definitely a challenging book to read. I remember I tried to read it about 3 years ago and couldn't get past a certain scene (anyone who has read it will know what I am talking about.) I am so glad I came back to the book when I was ready though as it is truly exceptional.
