SpoilerIn the beginning, I didn't think that Amir could be redeemed after what he did to Hassan but I was wrong. The sacrifices that he made got Amir to a place where he was able to forgive himself for what he did and make it right. I adore how Hassan continued to see the good parts in Amir even when Amir treated Hassan so terribly. Hassan knew his place in the world which, unfortunately, made people like him, Hazaras, perceived as less than human and treated like slaves. Hassan still treated those that did him wrong with respect and kindness and he passed that on to Sohrab. My heart breaks for people living in Afghanistan especially women. There is so much injustice and cruelty happening in that country and is being justified by using a religion that's main message is to spread love. This novel highlighted that Amir, Hassan and Sohrab's story is more than that. It's the reality and nobody is doing anything about it.

This is a decent book, but very tragic and at most points, difficult to read. I’m glad I read it but I don’t knowing I’d read it again. I’m a bit surprised by the lack of Islamophobia, but I suppose the characters had far more to contend with.

That was somehow even more emotional than I expected. Beautiful storytelling and a very honest look at the cruelty of Afghanistan under Taliban rule. The protagonist was... a lot and sometimes very difficult to follow in his decisions but I actually think that it's one of the biggest strengths of the novel to present a character that makes many bad choices, behaves cowardly, and has to deal with the repercussions and his guilt. It also leads to the reader questioning their own belief that they would have chosen better at least a few times.
Listened to this on audio that was read by the author, which i felt was a really nice touch and his voice was easy to listen to. It also ensured that I would not try and mispronounce the names.

i was expecting to love this because i love the genre and everyone raves about it. however, i struggled enjoying a book where i really despised the main character. i never really wanted him to succeed so i never really got invested unfortunately. i only got invested in the side characters story which was devastating. the writing was amazing though.
