This is an exceptional memoir from a voice we very possibly could have never heard from.

The Jim crow realities Winfred suffered are hard to read, but his bravery and his voice makes this story deeply affecting and memorable.

This book also makes real how far we must go to prevent such oppressive structures in our present and our futures.
Highly recommend.

This book made me feel all the things. Such a beautiful universe that SJM has sucked me into. It’s so easy to feel the emotion and visualize the courts and characters. Can’t put this series down!

An absolutely incredible view into the life of Winfred Rembert; the horrors he lived through, the moments that inspired his art, the sweetness of his heart that he maintained for his wife, children, and family.

Also, a heartbreaking but necessary reminder that the evils behind slavery and racism were ever present in a not so long ago past.

Unbelievably brutal and painful, shocking (not shocking). Conversational. I felt like we sat down together and he told me his life story. Kudos to Erin Kelly for capturing his voice so vividly. Audio book was fantastic; the physical book gorgeous, glossy pages, full of pictures of his leather art work.

What a memoir! What a life! This is a masterfully told slice of history -- Rembert was a talent, as an artist and storyteller and activist. Bryan Stevenson provides a moving foreword and Rembert sprinkles in a couple beautiful vignettes from his wife Patsy's s perspective, which added a lot of dimension.
