✨ Review ✨ Hunt on Dark Waters by Katee Robert
The first book in a new fantasy romance series (Crimsom Sails) this book is different than other KR books I've read (Dark Olympus and Wicked Villains series) in that it has a lot more world-building and plot development.
Evelyn jumps through a portal to escape Lizzie, her vampire girlfriend, 's house, because her family which is shortly arriving there. She ends up in the ocean, where Bowen, a Cŵn Annwn captain (basically a monster-hunting pirate in the Threshold realm) pulls her up and gives her the choice to join the crew or die.
Evelyn comes to question whether the Cŵn Annwn crews are doing good or harm, leading Bowen to second guess some of the principles he's taken as doctrine. Unsurprisingly for KR, they're attracted to each other, but surprisingly, it takes quite a while for anything to come of this (approx 1/3 into the book!)
I thought this was a fun read, though maybe not earth-shattering in any way. I was engaged through the end excited to see how things would develop. Be prepared for a cliffhanger-series style ending where things are far from resolved!

I picked this book up while shopping today and got through it in an evening. It's pretty short for a fantasy and the pacing is quick. I thought it was fun, and some of the lines are just great. Characters too. I wish there had been a little more emphasis on the development of the romance, which in part might be because the book was on the shorter and quicker side for a fantasy, so maybe it will continue to develop. But for an afternoon-evening read it was quick, fun, and palatable.

Some things happen way too easily and seemed stakes was never raised
