Some of these tales are written wonderfully, and are great tellings of them. The ones where Ellis goes off track more, or makes them up entirely, are actually probably the weakest. Fun though, and if you're into what it says it is, it's a good read. Organizing by geography is, I think, a good thought, but don't be tricked into thinking this is a wholly academic work. Good storytelling, though, for the most part.

Good sampling of tales from various Celtic peoples. Interesting coming from a position solely with knowledge of Irish folklore, and the similarities across the myths both in content, form and theme.

I do wish there had been some meatier sections, as it suffers from bouncing between short stories with no connective tissue in narrative, only in origin.

Ellis provides a very approachable and enjoyable survey of stories and legends from various Celtic cultures. His introductions to the book and the different sections are fascinating and educational. Reading this book was like taking a mini college course from a fun professor who communicates his enthusiasm for the material. Do not be put off by the odd names and words used; Ellis defines them when they are important, and you get used to them pretty quickly.

I loved reading every region's myths and legends and seeing how they were influenced. Ellis is a great storyteller, but I do wonder if all the original myths treated women as prizes or objects as well.
