I really liked "Now we shall be entirely free" but got bored with this one. Read probably 85% of it.

Stared off great. I felt about half way through that nothing was going to happen and then the pace picks up again. No spoilers here. A good and enjoyable read. Some great characters.

I picked this up from my local charity shop and was interested by how the story would develop regarding the subject matter. I also love historical novels. I enjoyed the book and the characters, however even though it was well written, I feel that maybe the book, if it had been slightly longer could have developed some of the themes within it and some of the characters background more. Some issues like what was in the cellar of the Monnard's House (Jean-Baptiste never ventures down there, even though you know he wants too) could have added to the experience. This was still an enjoyable read.

beautiful, same atmosphere as ‘perfume’, both are lovely reads particularly in winter/spring :)

I enjoyed the historical setting of this novel and the descriptions of the work very much, though I felt deeply suspicious of how conveniently Jean-Baptiste and Héloïse’s relationship worked out.
