I wasn't expecting this to have as much heart as it did, but it definitely has heart and pulled at my heartstrings. I really enjoyed the complicated father/son dynamics portrayed in here and with these characters. And Jake and Tom (and Pete) will probably stick in my head for a bit.

I also really liked the supernatural aspects. They were spooky but also multifaceted.

Thriller aspect kept me on the edge of my seat too. So this is definitely a thriller with some substance behind it.

Title: The Whisper Man
Author: Alex North
Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Read type: Physical

What a consuming read! Dark, captivating and terrifying, I didn’t want to put this one down.

If I was living alone I’d be turning on the lights and setting the home alarm because this book lives up to its hype, it’s creepy AF.

Throughout the book there’s four different pov’s, the widowed dad, his 7 yo son, and two detectives. The widowed dad plot carries a lot of emotion, with him trying to navigate life after the death of his wife and now being a single parent. But at the same time there’s this serial killer plot that’s terrifying and incredibly unnerving and both plots are interwoven together beautifully.

This book was so well written, you should definitely add this one to your spooky tbr.

Books like this are the reason I love reading. I'm still thunderstruck and in awe after finishing it, even though crime thrillers aren’t usually my thing.

Let’s start with the obvious: this was an exceptional book, one of the best I’ve read in years. In a sea of books, it’s hard to find a true gem—a story that is not only well-written but also tightly crafted, with nothing extraneous. Every word, sentence, and chapter in this book serves a purpose, adding to Alex North's masterful narrative.

I’m so grateful for authors like North: his writing is simple yet top-notch, fully immersive, and flawlessly executed. He expertly blends first-person POV with third-person, and even adds the eerie perspective of the serial killer, all without revealing too much.

The suspense is a solid 10 out of 10. While there are gruesome acts (this is, after all, a serial killer story involving children, which is clear from the first chapter and not a spoiler), North handles these scenes with a certain elegance. He doesn’t dwell on graphic details but allows the horror to exist just beneath the surface, making it all the more chilling.

Once I hit a certain point, I couldn’t put it down. I needed to know how it ended, and yes, I stayed up late reading, shivering with anticipation.

What an amazing ride. Truly absolutely recommend this book!
