First published in the 80s and reads like it could've been written yesterday. I am so happy to see older, landmark manga works still getting English translations and US publications.

A beautiful and sad, but empowering, story that follows a housewife searching for her identity within the confines of a disappointing marriage and the difficulties and rewards of motherhood.

(was sad that the cat disappeared)

The manga collection itself is quite good but I think the ending essay/biography is great and really makes it.

Beautifully written and drawn. I loved following the journey in vignettes of family life. Husband suck though—I hoped she’d leave him. 😅

I never want kids.

DNF @ 25%

I actually think the art style and the honesty about being a stay at home mom in Japan was refreshing. I'm just not a mom so I didn't identify with the internal monologue to read 300+ pages of it.

The story really made me feel for thw protagonist and I could relate to her feelings about motherhood and her children, but her relationship with her husband only made me frustrated. I ended up exclaiming ”divorce is an option!” (I know, it was very much more complicated than that in Japan in the 1980s, but the sentiment still stands) multiple times when reading the comic.

I really like Yamada’s art style and can’t wait to pick up her other works.
