Not a complex book in terms of writing or prose--I was surprised on this read to find how simple the writing really is. But And Then There Were None is a nail-biter nonetheless, especially when the deaths start piling up and the terror and animal instinct set in among the survivors. And it does offer some thoughts about the corroding nature of guilt, the loss of convention and “polite society” in the face of suspicion, and the thwarted desire to execute ultimate justice on the guilty.

Starting in Chapter 10, my (previously indifferent) eighth graders suddenly started to come alive. “No, don’t stop!” they have started to beg at each break. “We can’t leave off here!!”

I expect it will be a short rush to the end this week, as they wait to compare their guesses and predictions with the ending.
