My Time in the Affair by Stylo Fantome

I know I am in the minority here, but this book left me with that "meh" feeling. Good premise, good story telling, but it took too long for something other than the affair to happen. The back story development dragged. At some point in the middle I was praying for a car chase, or some gunshots, based on Tal's background. By about page 200, I was like there are only forty some pages left, what could possibly happen to make me love this book? Those forty pages made my rating go from one star to two. The best thing about this book....Tal Canaan.

Damn Stylo Fantome does it again and blowing me away with her words! The characters and their story entailing the premise of wanting to cheat on your husband and writing their story well on a subject that can be heartbreaking to talk and/or to read about!

Heck, there is even a forewarning of what the book is about in the disclaimer and even written in the synopsis:"I made a conscious decision to cheat on my husband. That one line alone intrigued me to want to know what this story is all about and written by this author...anything was possible.

The marriage relationship between Michael and Micha Rapaport a.k.a. “The Mikes” has lost its spark for some time. There is a difference of opinions and trying out different things never come into play. Michael feels all is peachy keen and good but Micha wants something more, some spice in her life to the point that she is planning to go about it with someone else.

One of the things you love about him. One of the things he loves about you. How many “things” does it take before it becomes the whole thing?

A job opportunity gives her the chance to follow through with her plan but just when she decides to back out and to push more into getting help with her husband an unexpected encounter with Tal Canaan changes things. A mysterious man not giving too many details away about himself but has an intense need to be around Micha and where she is caught up in his words and the intense physical connection when they are together.

Without giving away any spoilers, let me say that there are so many feels in this book. The good, the bad, the pretty, the ugly, the sad, and the happy will have your mind overwhelmed with shocking moments and emotions! Seriously I was thinking it was another book that involved cheating. Expected situations and outcomes were inevitable but there were also unexpected results too. You will see what I mean when you pick up this must read 5 stars read! ;)

I was emotionally rocked by this book!! It is about one of the most taboo subjects in the romance genre: cheating! Oh no, did I just say that? Yeah I did, one of the main topics of the book is that Mischa cheats on her husband then has to deal with the ramifications and consequences. Tal is the man that Mischa cheats with and the two of them embark on a journey that may rip your heart out if you allow yourself to be taken in by all of the emotions that drip off these pages. Open your mind to the evolution of cheating, you very well may find hope, inspiration, and love.

Seriously?...

I skimmed. A lot.

So first and foremost, this book tackles infidelity which some people don't like to read so there is my warning, and it was for me for a while too but I put that all aside this year. Sadly, this book didn't "wow" me at all. Not even the angst.

Here's what got me: we didn't even get a full backstory on why Mischa's marriage was "so terrible". We get a chapter. That's it. We know A) she wasn't happy and B) she hadn't had sex in 6 months. Give me more. Validate her infidelity and feelings for me. She was planning the cheating BEFORE the author even told us why.

I wasn't very keen on any of the characters. Sure, they had some redeeming moments but to me they were just not realistic at all. It was very difficult for me to empathize with the heroine. I felt like I was force-fed reasons why it's okay to be unfaithful and when you are unhappy in your failing marriage you just don't fill your husband in on it first. Throw Mischa's whininess on top of everything else in this book and it just completely fell BLAH for me.

The dialogue was not for me. First person then third person then this person and blah. I was over it.

This book wasn't boring. And I read the whole thing. It was just kind of non-believable to me. It didn't hold my interest because I was detached from the start.

I still cannot believe this book has such a high rating. The entire book was spent trying to justify to me, the reader, why she was having an affair and I still call BS. And then the eye rollable way she end up getting out of the marriage? ughhhhh. Everyone was raving about it and I caved to the hype. What a waste of time.

Ended up getting used to the writing style....switched between 3rd person and 1st person...at one or more points both H/h, but wasn't a fan for several chapters in.

I did it! I read a book about cheating and I liked it......maybe even loved it a little. *gasp* My motto for this year is never say never. I am happy I pushed this boundary and you can be too. My views on cheating haven't changed but maybe my judgements of the cheaters has.
We are human, after all. We do bad things, make mistakes and sometimes we enjoy making those mistakes, even if we hate ourselves for doing so. It doesn't make us bad people.
I felt Mischa's pain, her loneliness, her self doubt and guilt. I was screaming no to her but at the same time, I was secretly rooting her on. There is right and there is wrong. Cheating is wrong. I know it. Mischa knew it. But sometimes wrong is easier than right. Sometimes, we need to confirm the grass is really greener before we have the courage to jump the fence. Maybe, people deserve to find something good, to be happy, despite their mistakes.
Mischa and Tal's story was one of love, growth and forgiveness and even if you hate cheating, you can fall on love with their story. I did.
