I listened to this book via the libby app courtesy of my local library, but I will probably end up buying the hard copy. The listen was enjoyable, and I couldn't help but think of it as a textbook or encyclopedia. The book is packed with intel directing you to useful sources of info that would take years to learn/find solo. The music business is complex and dynamic, but Ari provides a helpful roadmap for going far outside your comfort zone.

Ari's book is a straight forward "results may vary" "How To" for aspiring musicians. The tone makes it feel like you're talking to a friend, who's definitely not a lawyer- but has been around the block. There are other books out there, on this topic (one, even, with the same title)... but I found this one highly accessible and down to earth, which helps set it apart.

I’m sure if I read this book 4 or 5 years ago when it first came out, I would have given it a higher rating. However, everything in this book can be found doing a google search (especially since Ari’s Take is often the #1 blog that comes up for these types of searches).  It’s 2020, and while there are some (not many, but some) resources in the book that I wouldn’t have found using Google, a lot of them have been bought out by other companies or are no longer servicing musicians.

I’d definitely recommend it to someone who is just trying to break it in the music industry, and not someone who’s already put out music trying to grow. (Speaking of which, Hi, if you’re reading this. Please check out my music  https://open.spotify.com/artist/0mUqsyfGhPlbRQftxSrH5k?si=Taxsaz3UTJOdyPJzuHVYlw

Overall, this book is a real reminder that books can’t be updated like the internet can.
