Me gusto.

Maybe more like a 4.75

I kind of guessed the ending and while I'm not happy with what the aliens are, I can live with it

WELL THEN...

There were many times I wanted to drop this book. The concept itself is interesting: the planet is being attack by overly powerful beings and no one knows why and no one can stop them. I'm totally down for trying that out... until it seems hopeless and slow.
The pacing was so very slow for me (personal problem, I know). At 20 pages in, I was done, BUT I've DNF'd many books this year, so I thought I should try to persevere!

It was so slow and I had no idea where it was going -- "weren't they supposed to meet?" I kept asking myself. Then "what was the point of them meeting?" and "Oh, this isn't the end? WAIT, this is a series?!" I groaned as I noticed the Goodreads entry for it.
And, once I realized it was a series, the slow-pacing and non-action action made sense-- this is the set up. *sigh*

I still gave it three stars...
Why?
Because the mystery and the fear is real. The actions of the characters seem pretty realistic to me and I liked the twist (even if I saw it coming haha). I like that the MP is a POC... thought it was weird how she was the only MP who wasn't white... although I think Xander is Chinese so... that is something and hopefully he will have a bigger part in the next book.
In the beginning of the book I felt just thrown into this world with no idea what was going on--confused-- and I didn't like it, until I realized it was a way to connect with the humans, who were also confused. So, the emotions the book tries to make the reader feel I think can get through which was interesting.

I did end up skipping a lot of internal dialogue, because I felt it to be repetitive and unneeded. The book actually went faster and I enjoyed it more when I started skipping big paragraphs, so in the end I realize this writing style might not be my thing! Another reason why I brought it up from 2 stars. If it is a 'just me' kinda thing, then I can't really blame the book for it. AND I still thought it was interesting.
I would totally watch this movie.

I would recommend this to people 14+, who don't mind a slow burn, like invasions, but don't need tons of action. Possibly also people who enjoy light horror because of that feeling of fear that permeates throughout the book. Oh! and Beauty & the Beast fans.

I didn't expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. It's a really interesting tale of an unlikely romance. Think Romeo and Juliet with a Sci-fi twist and you've got this summed up. Is romance the right word though? I think what our main characters have is so more complicated than that. Extremely well written, well planned story.

First of all, I find the overall premise of this book kind of weird. I don’t know why I keep requesting sci-fi alien books, because I don’t actually like them very much. But anyway, I did like some things about this book. The emotions that I felt at times really took me by surprise. I was going along reading and then all of the sudden one of the scenes really hit me and I really began to empathize with Eighth. Like seriously, my heart just broke for him. Raven, on the other hand, I never really liked. I just didn’t really find her authentic as a character. She had all these mood swings. I mean, I understand that she’s currently witnessing the end of the world and that her boyfriend was killed and all that, but the context in which she has mood swings just didn’t really fit. So with that being said, her and Eighth’s relationship wasn’t my favorite. Eighth deserved better.

The writing in this book was kind of weird at times. It was very slow-moving to begin with, but then the flow wasn’t great or consistent. I mean, the book is almost 500 pages so it’ll take a little while to get through. It also deals with some HEAVY topics like abusive relationships, racism, grief, hope, identity. Just to name a few.

Overall, I thought this book was just okay. It didn’t blow me away, but I didn’t hate it either. Like I said earlier, I was surprised by the depth of the emotions I was feeling in the middle of the book, but I still didn’t particularly care for almost all of the characters. If you’re already into sci-fi, though, you might like this one.

Overall Rating: 3

Violence: Heavy

Ahh, that sinking feeling when you near the end of a book and realize its plot is not going to resolve, but hang you from a cliff.

Still, this was very enjoyable -- and captivating even though I have mush-brain from packing for a cross-country move. Plot and characters are like a mix between [b:Warm Bodies|15842439|Warm Bodies (Warm Bodies, #1)|Isaac Marion|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1394072655s/15842439.jpg|10090210] and [b:The 5th Wave|16101128|The 5th Wave (The 5th Wave, #1)|Rick Yancey|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1359853842s/16101128.jpg|19187812], but with a unique setting and pair of narrative voices. The version of sign language in this book, and the ways in which Raven and Eighth come to communicate with and understand each other, is really quite beautiful. I'm going to look for the sequel -- even though I'm annoyed to have to wait for it.

Zero Repeat forever is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast with an alien invasion, teens surviving and a frustrating story. I've realized that I don't really care for the Beauty and the Beast story, and especially not here where it really renforces the idea that it's not love but Stockholm syndrome.

The book is told from 2 perspectives, the human girl, Raven, and the alien, Eighth. It does this pretty well however most of the time I found it would tell what's happening from Raven's perspective of not understanding Eighth, than explain it poorly from Eighth's perspective. In the end it just felt a bit frustrating and like it took twice as long to get anywhere.

There were brilliant parts of the story but extremely few and far between. It's set up for a sequel but I don't really feel like I need to read the sequel. the big mystery wasn't really that surprising when it was shown off and wasn't made such a big deal of unitl the final few chapters, so I just didn't feel any excitement or attachment.

If you want a pretty decent retelling of Beauty and the Beast but with aliens, pick it up, it's not a bad read I just found it long and frustrating at times.

Maybe all Eighths think for themselves, feel lonely, and like holding hands.

There aren’t enough words to explain just how much my alley this book is, and I picked it up on a whim at the library because I thought it looked pretty. Thank you, guiding reading spirit, for placing this book in my path. It’s a new personal favorite. I can tell, because I already want to reread it!

Eighth, by far, wormed his way into my heart the fastest and now there is a big room in my soul chamber just for how much I love him. A wholesome, good bean. Thinking about him makes me feel warm and fuzzy. I’m always a sucker for the big, soft, protective types.

As a warning, this won’t be for everyone! It’s slow building and slow burning, but I love that stuff. The twists are great and the characters are wonderfully developed. The invasion depicted is both familiar and shockingly different than what I’ve seen before. Give it a chance if you’re interested!

Now I’m off to order my own copy and wait excitedly for the sequel to come later this year. What wonderful timing! ✨
