If Shea Serrano writes a book, I will read it.

MAOT is filled with all the things you’d want from a Shea book: Conversational style, humor, and a surprising amount of heart and care put into seemingly crazy questions and scenarios. If you’re a movie fan I can’t recommend this enough.

Well-written and fun, but unfortunately our movie tastes didn’t overlap enough, which meant too many of Serrano’s references and plot descriptions were meaningless to me. Having heard him as a guest on a podcast, and really liking that, I’d hoped for more relevant stories.

An entertaining read with great illustrations. Makes for a good coffee table or bathroom book. I read the whole book and it was an exercise in diminishing returns. I quite liked several chapters, didn't care for others, and felt like I was humoring the author for good chunks of the book.

Shea is the absolute greatest at writing in a format that feels like you're just having a conversation with a buddy at a barbershop or a restaurant about great debates and discussions in pop culture, and this book is just full of them. The illustrations from Arturo are top-notch, each chapter has a variation of discussion/format, and he's inclusive of a wide-variety of genres that got me to watch different types of movies that I had never seen. Shea is that dude.

Rarely write reviews, but I really, really enjoy Shea Serrano, so I feel I can’t just leave those three stars hanging. Loved (LOVED) Basketball (And Other Things). Laughed out loud several times, revisit it occasionally. Love the concept of a series of these. There’s just too many terrible movie opinions in here, and where Basketball has this real deep deep love of movies, the love and appreciation for the medium here is just shallower. Basketball felt like a hang with your best, funniest hoops fan friend; the film fan you’re chilling with here isn’t as fun. There are chapters that feel half-baked; there’s no joyful absurdity in them, just a sort of pointlessness. It is, at times, a proper slog. The first book was that first thrilling 60+ win season of Death Lineup Warriors. This is a 42-win Orlando Magic first round exit. It’s the best way I can put it.
