The concept is sound. The plot is fun and fast-moving. But then... the dialogue felt just a bit robotic.

A nice pulpy sci-fi story.

Just finished this one. It started off with the main character feeling like Han Solo. Just replace smuggling with gambling. It evolved into something entirely different. One man trying to save a world and humanity at the same time. The back drop for this was definitely ScFi. But the story didn't feel that Scfi to me. Like said earlier it felt more like one man finding himself and trying to save a world and Humanity at the same time. There are two other volumes and perhaps this setup will lead to a more Scfi styled book. Then again who am to say what is and what is not Scfi. Just one random guys opinion on an old vintage paperback. So take that for what it's worth. would give it 3 1/2 stars.

Note: This is really a review of the entire Deathworld trilogy.

My dad's recommendation. It's clear reading these books that this is seminal science fiction, and it's certainly interesting to read from that standpoint. Reading these books is like watching a socioecological Sherlock Holmes detective story. They're full of action and fascinating worldbuilding, which probably explains the characters remaining fairly stagnant and familiar throughout.

This book felt like video game writing but without much character development. The main character seemed to be omniscient. Definitely fails the Bechtel test but likely passes the Sexy Lamp test as the lone identified female character has a role (but just happens to be the one that can't suppress their emotions).
