This was a hard book to read. First, it started off really slow and I had a hard time getting into it. Then, when I did get invested and begin to care about the characters, it got sad! The racism and discrimination in this book made me so angry, but it didn't surprise me given the time period (1930s). The characters and situations felt real and I enjoyed the inclusion of a Black librarian. The story of the Pack Horse Librarians and how they fit into the WPA is fascinating. Recommended.

This book is built around the history of the Pack Horse Library project in Kentucky. It also focuses on a group of people who had blue skin due to a blood enzyme issue. If you are looking for a light read, this would not be it. There is not much of a positive nature that occurs in the story. It is well written though and definitely mirrors the reality of those considered different from others as well as the severe consequences of poverty.
