This one was disappointing. I know that it was outside the usual canon of Agatha Christie novels being set in ancient Egypt and without the great Christie detectives, but I just never got into it. 😔

When I was a kid, I was introduced to the world of mysteries by way of Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, Trixie Belden. As I grew older, my mystery world expanded quite naturally to include my mom's 1970s paperback editions of Agatha Christie. I'd already been introduced by way of the many TV shows and movies based on Agatha's books.

Another love I've had since childhood, is Ancient Egypt. I've always found anything from that set to be fascinating, so when I discovered that there was an Agatha Christie mystery in that setting? Double win! It's a delightful read, perfect for when the world has bogged me down, and I need a bit of a mental cleanse. It's deliciously dramatic, bordering on soapy, but all in the best of ways. A concubine is brought into the household of a priest, causing instant drama and tension amongst his other family members. After she dies in a horrific seeming-accident, other members of the family are slowly picked off one-by-one, leading some to suspect that she may have come back from the dead to enact her revenge.

I tried reading this one, which is set in Ancient Egypt, three times before finally managing to finish it. The last time I did it by creating a complete dramatis personæ as well as genealogical tree for all the characters, that is, the twenty-two suspects, in the book. I found myself wanting more from the setting and was disappointed by the eventual resolution. This book probably isn't representative Christie (I have seen some of the films).

This is all very sad as I took a writing test that analyzed some of my work and it reported that my style was closest to, you guessed it, Agatha Christie.

This might be one of my favorite Agatha Christie books so far.  It doesn't have Miss Marple of Poirot and is set in ancient Egypt.  I kept guessing who the murderer was and kept getting everything wrong.  This was a great mystery.  Everyone had a motive and opportunity.  So fun.

Certainly one of my favorite books by Agatha Christie. It's set entirely in Ancient Egypt and she used all the research from years of accompanying her husband (who was an archeologist) through Egypt. I read it for the first time when I was thirteen and I was in awe for the most time, since I was fascinated by Ancient Egypt at the time and also mystery books.
