To start this off, I have DNF’d at ~65%.

I knew it wasn’t for me when it took me ten times to start the book.

I could not nail down Lark’s personality, it flip-flopped everywhere which bored me because I couldn’t tell if she was whimsical or super serious or what. It was worse with Darius. I had no interest in him sadly and was confused by his first few chapters. I liked that he was quieter then other male leads (there’s only so much snarky men I can take) but other then that, he didn’t provide much for me.

This was good but left me feeling like it was just a preview of something else.

Overly Detailed

I enjoyed Lark & her sisters and Darius.
The actual story was good.
But what I didn’t enjoy was how overly descriptive it was.
I just wanted the story to keep moving and found myself skimming at times to try and get back to the action.

I read it while in a really low point because it was on kindle unlimited, and I LOVED it so much I immediately ordered the entire series. I was so invested in the small and littered mysteries. The family dynamics were both heart-wrenching and warming. I thought the romantic aspect of this would be my favorite part, but honestly it was just an added highlight at the end of it all. The world building was also really cool to explore. I just think it was beautiful.

Picked this one up from the library based purely on the cover (and then the cover copy). Very romantasy, but the romance isn't compelling for me (the meet-cute was tremendously bland) and the worldbuilding is being revealed in ways that leave me scrambling to make sense of it all, and the author keeps making dramatic reveals out of things I had already assumed to be true. (I can't grasp the lived reality of the world, which makes the characters feel like flimsy dolls posing dramatically.) So, not for me, but someone else might have a blast with this dark fantasy romance.
