Absolutely up to her usual standard. Fantastic story-telling. Complex. Just great

Found this book promising as the start, as I find the writing style easy to read and quite nice. However, I rated this 2* instead of 3* because I just feel like they introduce one storyline thats actually interesting, and push it aside for a totally different case? I just feel like this book turned into pure filler, and the author decided they wanted to talk about syrian refugees and IRA bombings more than they wanted to talk about the murder/rape of the hairdresser they started out with. Found the characters quite annoying as well- somehow Karen knows everyone, and is allowed to get away with stealing, breaking into people's houses, etc, etc. Overall, it was okay, just didn't focus on the interesting storylines, mixed with average characters and was mostly filler/drama.

Sometimes the dialogue is a little TOO expository, and sometimes the research tidbits are shoehorned in, but I always wanted to know what happened next, so it's fine.

I was absolutely enjoying this right up to the end. I didn't enjoy that part but the rest of the book was fantastic. It's very captivating and drags you into Karen Pirie's journey into the past. And just when you think it's going down one path, she takes you down another separate line of enquiry just because she can't get to sleep. I really enjoyed this, the story the characters and their growth and the way it all came together. Except for that bit at the end.

Very well worth ready.
