I had been looking forward to reading this since it was first released over the states. Sadly being the UK I had to wait longer for it. Then a online friend sent me their copy and I was super excited. However, I was disappointed in the story line.
The Replacement had the potiental to be a very unique and fantastic story. However, its just doesn't. Although I read it rather quick. It didn't grab me and quite frankly left me rather confused. In most books we will get some background story that will help the reader with the different world. However, here we have just been dumped into a world with no explanation on how things are there.
The story is told from Mackie point of view. Mackie was switch with a human child when he was just baby and he is trying to live a normal human life. There wasn't really anything memorial about Mackie or most of the characters for that matter. Only one character stood out for me and that was Mackie big sister Emma. It was her love for her "brother" that really stood out to me. She adores Mackie even though he isn't really her biological brother.
Although, about a third into the book, the story picks up a little bit and we start to understand this strange world and why its the way it is.
It's an interesting world that Brenna has created with monsters and stuff of nightmares. However, I would suggest though if you really wanted to read this borrow it.

I was reading someone else's review of this book and noticed that my review was totally missing! I read this book 4 years ago! I've heard of this happening to other people, but this is the first time it has happened to me. I have started copying all of my reviews and keeping them in a file on my computer just in case something like this happens. I'm not sure what happened to my review, but I am rewriting it now.
I would give this book 2.5 stars. The characters were ok. I didn't really love any of them and I was expecting it to be a lot creepier based on the cover, which I loved when I first saw it, but now I think it's a bit overdone. I wish there had been a bit more detail about the changelings. I felt like I was left guessing about some of their background.

Every once in a while I stumble upon a book that takes me completely by surprise. I had no idea what to expect going into this book, but decided to take a chance on it because of the interesting synopsis and creepy cover art. I am so glad I did, because this was hands down one of the most enjoyable reading experiences I have had all year.
On the surface, Mackie seems like an average teenage boy. He goes to school, has a crush on a cheerleader and feels alienated from the adults in his life. But Mackie is a Replacement, a changling left in the place of a human baby that was stolen from it's crib in the middle of the night sixteen years ago. Because of his potentially fatal reactions to iron, blood and consecrated ground, each day is a struggle just to survive.
In Mackie, Yovanoff has created a truly wonderful character. The reader can't help but be captivated by his story. His sense of longing to live a normal life...to just belong somewhere, is heartbreaking. And his absolute devotion to his sister is just one of the many reasons I love him so much.
I loved just about every aspect of this book...from the smart dialogue, to all the truly creepy characters Mackie meets in the Underground world called Mayhem, to Mackie's best friend. The ONE thing that I was not so thrilled with was the female lead, Tate. She was just too...harsh for my taste. She didn't seem to appreciate everything that Mackie ended up going through to help her. And her hot and cold attitude toward him was frustrating. But in the end, that was just a minor annoyance that is easily overlooked.
What a wonderful surprise this turned out to be. Such an amazing story with truly unique and unforgettable characters. Loved every word!!

I wish the story wasn’t over. I’ve been wanting to read this book for years and I finally did it. It was a beautifully eerie read. I honestly couldn’t stop reading it. I got hooked from the very beginning and enjoyed every second of it. I got dark fairytale vibes from it and would like more like this.
