It's always cool to see a new place and new pantheons, but this book was such a drag that I couldn't enjoy any of it.

The publisher calls this God-Punk - that is a bit to detailed or me, so I'll go with either Urban Fantasy or Dystopia...

While David Mogo wasn't just as fast paced and fun as some of my other favourite UFs, the fresh setting, and different tone and voice more than made up for it!
I've seen some other reviews complaining about too much introspection and not enough action, and I can't say I consciously noticed that or was in any way bothered.

I did really like the main character and especially his Papa Udi and a girl named Fati. I did lose track about who is who a few times with the other side characters though, as the cast grew, and they all seemed to have a whole multitude of names (or titles?). I always found my footing again, but my memory is already bad for names, so this was the only real challenge for me.

Bits and pieces of the dialogue where in slang, and I had to work to catch all of that, but it was little enough to actually add to the setting, and not feel like a chore. I got used to it pretty quickly and then it got easier to "translate". Here's one such example:

"I understand." He chews a bit. "That thing wey you do with Sango, your body suppose don scatter."
"I feel like say pessin carry my body knack am for ground, arrange am back," I say, glad to be back to the old us. "The thing dey pain, I no lie."

I usually hate info dumps, and I also saw some reviews complain about those in here - I actually felt like I got just the utter basic info, and had to make do with that! Which is fine, especially with such a short and quick read.

All in all this was fun to read and to explore Lagos, which I have since looked up!

a weirdly structured book, it feels more like three novellas with the same overarching plot rather than an actual cohesive narrative. That being said it was fun! I had a good time, I enjoyed the character of David Mogo (Godhunter), though it’s kind of weird how much significant plot stuff happens just completely off screen for the sake of twists, which feels kind of lazy because they’re not foreshadowed in a way that lets you predict them.

Strange story structure, it felt like several books crammed into one, and a lot of the story seemed to happen offscreen while the MC was captured. Twists happened really quickly with not much buildup.

A fairly standard heroes journey with an AMAZING setting and mythology.  I want more post apocalyptic Lagos.

What a truly unique and wonderful novel.

I've never read a book like David Mogo Godhunter* and I likely never will again. I can't think of any other book that has a premise quite like this. It's utterly one on its own and it's glorious.

Set in Lagos we follow David Mogo a Godhunter. In this version of our world, the Gods have been expelled from their home and are now (in most cases) wreaking havoc on the humans below. That's where David comes in, being half God and all. He moves them on and deals with the more difficult cases. When desperation for money strikes he agrees to hunt down two gods and that's really where the story takes off from.

The world and the characters within this novel are so fully formed it feels like you've been there and you know these people. I started to understand the geography of the land and could understand battles more as a result. The characters are so well developed. They each have their own little ticks that you notice more as you read. David tended to make me giggle with his dry humour and sarcasm. Papa Udi exuded wisdom whilst permanently seemingly like a despairing parent which suited his position so well and Fati just made me smile. They each played an important role throughout the story and added that little something that made me enjoy this book all the more.

The book felt as though it was divided into three parts with each having a slightly different adversary but linking to form one overarching plot. It also felt as though it was David's journey of self-acceptance which I adored.

I felt like I learnt quite a bit from this novel too, which is always the sign of a good book to me.
