Trigger warnings abound. Please look that over before you choose this book. It was one of those that I read in sections because it was really intense and hard to read for long periods of time. It was about a BigLaw (read most prestigious with the most revenue) Law Firm that abuses its first year associates. I'm guessing since the author is a lawyer that most of it is true which is depressing and frustrating and shows just how far our society has NOT come.
Spoiler alert:
does not have a happy ending.

In "The Boys Club," we follow Alex Vogel, notorious overachiever as she navigates corporate America, all while she promises that its dark underbelly won't change her but as we all know, absolute power corrupts absolutely. The deeper she falls into the rabbit hole, the harder it becomes to return to her old life. That is, until she is faced with a shocking act that forces her into re-thinking herself and the environment she's become accustomed to.
I read through the entertaining, page-turning debut while at work one afternoon and while I overall enjoyed it, I found that it lacked significant bite. One, there were too many characters with the same problems to keep track of. Second, similar scenes were repeated over and over. I never felt that they added anything to the story the third, fourth time the characters went to a dinner and spent copious amounts of money on food and alcohol. Third, I would like to believe the ending but I don't. Given the persona Alex crafted while she was employed at the firm and her actions, I was skeptical of her ending. For a novel that was supposed to depict the real world of finance and legal, etc., it simply seemed implausible that things would have unfolded as they did. That, and the reactions of her male co-workers, suddenly eager to help and provide assistance.
Because of the author's ability to maintain my interest and keep me engaged, I would certainly look into future books from her. This one, however, I thought didn't quite live up to my expectations or show me anything new when it comes to powerful men and abuse of power in corporate America.

While this book quickly sucked me in and it was hard to put down, I didn't really like the characters. I couldn't tell who I was supposed to like and dislike at points. Katz does a great job of exhibiting a toxic workplace, details of which unfortunately are real life for some.
Definitely recommend for those that work in corporate America or want a look inside the BigLaw offices of NYC.
Content warnings: drug use/abuse, sexual assault
