“Being perceived is excruciating. Especially if you can’t go person to person explaining why you look like that. I’d go to a lot more stuff if I knew I could take each person aside and explain to them why I look and dress the way I do.”

Not my favorite work of Irby's. I would recommend her other 2 recent essay compilations over this one. It just had a lot of TV stuff that I didn't find interesting, and there was a lot of... excrement?

While I find Samantha Irby's delivery and comedic style to be endearing, the topics in this book weren't very interesting to me and seemed too much like Wow, No Thank You. At a certain point I was like, yeah yeah, I get the picture

Honestly, the humor was not for me, and this is a book made up almost entirely of humorous essays. I enjoyed some of it, but reallyy had to embrace the cringe of millennial humor to power through.

Another funny collection by Irby. This one ranges from her favorite porn to the death of her mother to how to interact with teens. Each essay brings something totally different.

Not a bad book at all, just not necessarily for me. My friends loved it. There were definitely many laugh out loud lines! And other times where I skipped most of an essay because it wasn’t grabbing me. The jokes are about  everything from dead parents to diarrhea. This wasn’t my favorite book but it might very well be yours.

Anything that can make me laugh so hard I wake my baby up is worthy of a high rating.

This was my first Samantha Irby book. The self deprecation was just too nonstop for me. It made me feel like she actually hates herself but wants to mask it with jokes. There were disgusting (for me, I can’t deal with poo and there’s a lot), and occasionally funny, and to an extent very relatable. I’m not so concerned with the lack of continuity between essays, because that’s kind of the point of books filled with essays. That you share individual vignettes compiled in one place. I don’t know if I’m the audience, despite being a perimenopausal Black woman.
