Not going to lie, I got pretty confused at points in here (probably because I was listening to the audio with lots of pauses and multitasking) but it didn't bother me at all because I was so entranced by the dreamy setting and language. Reality and magic and dreams and memories were all woven together in such a way that I couldn't really parse one from the others but again, not a problem because I was just so enjoying the ride!

Gorgeously evocative - vicious and incisive and subversive in the best possible ways. Each sentence felt so precise and surprising, like no word was wasted or out of place. I loved how everyone was casually queer and messily all in each other's business.

So why did it take me over 2 months to read this fairly short novel? I could not tell you. Possibly it was because it often took a lot of concentration to follow and parse each sentence's meaning, and when I tend to read before bed, this would lead to me nodding off after only reading a few pages. There were a few times that the story suddenly slipped into a flashback and I wasn't sure what time the scene took place, and other times I *thought* we had flashed back but then that scene actually had been current.

But it is an absolutely gorgeous book overall. The magical elements were fascinating and very memorable. I found this parallel universe 1920's U.S. very compelling.

There’s so much to love here, and honestly I’m not disappointed by what was a five-star prediction. But while the writing is utterly breathtaking, without question,  there were so many missed opportunities I could see where the book stuck close to the original Gatsby text rather than exploring the new elements it was bringing to the table especially with respect to the marginalized identities these reinvented characters bore (e.g., I felt like Jordan’s perspective and her characterization as a transracial adoptee were a bit lacking past the discussions of how she was exoticized constantly, and there was a throwaway section about Jay Gatsby having a half-Native mother that I desperately wished for more from).
