Loved it! Very much reminded me of the His Dark Materials series. A great start to a prequel to them. Pullman does an amazing job at taking subject matter that most think is above a YA reader and making it feel simple and real, but not insulting, letting it sink into the brain was knowledge without anyone even realizing. And it is just as intriguing for an adult reader. Really enjoyed it, definitely recommend!

This addition to the story gives us more of Lyra's beginnings and helps to explain some of the prophecies. I'm excited to see where he takes this series next. Great read.

I absolutely loved this! If I hadn't been busy with holiday prep I would have read it in one sitting. :) Can't wait for the next one! I really need to go back and re-read the His Dark Materials trilogy in the meantime ...

I first read Pullman in my early teens, which were several moons ago now. I revisit him rarely but with deep admiration when I do. This book is no exception, it is a read that, for me, teeters on the brink of overwhelming. I did not expect to feel pity for a hyena...nor the acutely dreadful mix of emotions towards her human (I don't usually get nauseous in response to a character but Bonneville managed it). The story is grimly captivating, no more than you would expect of Pullman. It's made the shelf and is my second 5/5 for this year.

Pretty interesting, but I don't think I'll be continuing the series.

I'm hooked right back in to the world of Lyra's Oxford.
