OMG OMG OMG OMG

OMFG!!!!

This book! Wow! I know I say it a lot, but I really did devour it in one sitting. I had been messaging Rae and Eva (Rae Reads and NovelDeelights) sending random emojis and “shocking ” when I was reading. Then I fell asleep (long day) and woke up and kept reading until I had seen those two words THE END. Did I get closure? Don’t blinking think so, Luke and Mel would not let me sleep until their story had been told.

Now I must admit, I did not write in the diary I was on the tour for this one, so panic stations hit as I started this Sunday! But I was sucked in. Reading the opening chapter of the book from Luke’s point of view and I realised I did not have a scooby what this book about! I forgot the blurb and I tell you what BEST. DECISION. EVER! Seriously, no plot can be discussed, you need to go in blind and enjoy this ride!

So, you read the opening chapter, as I did, and you are led to unchartered territories and a “what is going on moment?” Then Part 1 kicks in and we are with Mel, Luke’s wife, and there was something off with her, something didn’t add up. Luke and the two children, Callum and Tessa, were not at the cottage in the Lake District for their family holiday as agreed when Mel got there. Where are they? What is going on? We learn events that have transpired in the last couple of years from Mel’s view. Again, what is going on?

Part 2, it is all about Luke, and the same events as before, but a whole new take. All I can say is when I was reading this, I was raging! My hand flew to my mouth so many times if it had not been for the glasses, I would have probably slapped myself in the eye! Seriously this was shocking stuff, what was I reading! I had so much pent-up anger from my week as it was and this literally made me want to explode!

When I read part 2, 3 and 4, I went back to the prologue, and re-read it and looking at it, it meant something completely different when you know things, wow! So much is given in the opening scenes that you do not know even realise it! I loved it!

Rona has taken an idea and changed it on its head from the norm. A brave subject too! This book unsettles you with the subject matter, sharp intake of breath and I whizzed through the book, was this really happening? A whole new type of crazy town, and not one I wanted to visit!

And the ending…. I mean that was an actual WTF, was it the right ending? Only you can decide, and then let me know what you thought. I thought it was just desserts but totally shocking, and I think the way that Ms Halsall wrote it all kind of casual like ‘yes this is everyday life look at me’ just rocked the boat even more.

Okay, I think I must stop now, I have the fear I will let something slip and then I may have to drive off to the Lake District myself and hide!!!

I completely agree with the tagline of this book, that this IS a page-turner of the fastest kind, it WILL turn your world as you know it upside down, and it WILL shatter your nerves.

WOW

This was a wild ride and I was totally here for it! Man did Mel get what she deserved! This was my 1st book by Kerry Wilkinson but will not be my last! I am adding all of her books to my TBR.

🎧 I’ll admit that the first 1/4 was such a slow burn and really not engaging that I did consider DNFing but once it switched to the past timeline it picked up the pace and caught my attention. The storyline wasn’t what I expected at all which is a good thing. The main theme of the story was a little lacking in the building of the story as I felt it needed more. The characters were both likeable and unlikeable. Found the ending a bit rushed and underwhelming. It was an ok listen.

A riveting story that will keep you hooked until the very end.

Mel had planned to spend some quality time with her family at a holiday cottage after work. However, upon arrival, she found the place deserted, and her family had left a note saying they had gone hiking. As hours passed, Mel began to feel uneasy, and she realized something was wrong when her family didn't return. She decided to call the police for help in finding her family. However, during police questioning, Mel realized she couldn't keep silent about her marriage. What secrets will the investigation reveal, and will Mel find her family?

I was completely engrossed in the story from start to finish, devouring it in a single day. I think it's best to go in blind, it'll make the twists and turns even more surprising. The only downside? The ending felt a bit rushed, but that didn't take away from the overall experience. If you're a fan of domestic drama and mystery, then this book is a must-read.

***Thank you to NetGalley, Rona Halsall, and Bookouture Audio for graciously sending me the audiobook to review. As always, all thoughts are my own.***

This domestic crime thriller is a slow burn to start out, but then Part 2 hits with a bang and it created a completely different take than where I thought this story was going. The story is told in 3 parts from different POVs. The twists hit with part 2 and keep coming till the end of the book! I really enjoyed this audiobook and recommend giving it listen! I was sucked in and finished this audiobook in one day🖤

Thank you @bookouture for allowing me to listen to this audiobook ahead of publication in exchange for my honest review.

Love you gone....

This was a really good psychological thriller, a tad light on the thriller side but that was fine. It was a fast read because it was a page turner.

I took one star because I hate it when I know what's coming and it was a little predictable at times but aside from that, this book didn't disappoint.

I found myself really rooting for Luke at times while at others wanting to shake some sense into him. He was a really relatable character.

Mel.... I think she'll surprise you.

It's hard to find a book where I don't get a little bored, but there was no point while I was reading this gem where boredom crosses my mind. It was a bit of a roller-coaster at times, sad, but a really good read by Rona Halsall.

Rona Halsall is fast becoming one of my new favorite authors. I really enjoy her mysteries because they are written in past tense, which is a more a comfortable way of reading for me but still has the tension ratcheted up (I believe other authors think that writing in present tense makes for better tension/suspense but not true for my taste). And also because they are slightly different subject matter than the typical new mother, frantic about her new child and worried about husband straying and so on. I posted about this on a book of hers I read earlier this week, which was about an older woman whose adult children are out of the house and her husband left her, and she wanted to show she could be independent and live well on her own.

This book begins from p.o.v. of wife (Mel) of Luke who is driving up to a remote holiday cottage for a holiday, refresh weekend. When she arrives, she finds that Luke and the two children are gone with a note that says they went for a hike. When it gets even darker she begins to worry and ultimately contacts mountain rescue and the police.

The facts of their relationship are slowly delivered over the next couple of days as she reveals she is stepmother to the two children - their mother died - and that the mother's death wasn't years ago, but just 3 years ago. Also, she has only been married to Luke for a year. And there have been fractures in their relationship that she said they are working on healing, thus this getaway weekend.

The book does then shift p.o.v. and goes way back in time. I will be honest and admit that I skim these sections. I really like to stay in the present and I got enough of the gist to understand the rationale for including this backstory.

What we think we know to be true, is it really? In Halsall's books, even when I guess (correctly) what the twist will be, it doesn't diminish my enjoyment. She has a great writing style, it's easy and comfortable to follow along. I think I've already purchased all of her other kindle books and anxious to get to the next one. I highly recommend this one!

For people who figure out twists easily, this will be one where you can figure it out early on, but you still want to know what will happen. I thought I knew what was going to happen and was mostly right, but I didn't waste any time here... It's still a good read.

Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for a copy of the ARC. I ended up listening to this one Scribd and thought the audiobook narrator, Katherine Press, did a great job.
