This book is absolutely fine. I wanted to like it a lot more than I did. Absolutely baffling decision to have the father be the narrator. He's borderline a non-character and the book would be far more interesting if Eleanor or Gwen were the main characters.

I have a lot more to say but I came from a book club so my thoughts are exhausted.

Some of the naming conventions can be really grating.

Props to the story for being dystopian while lighthearted tho.

I don’t know why but I always come back to dystopian or fantasy baseball novels! Even though I only played the game for two seasons and never hit the ball once I feel such a kinship to the game and I think that there is a special place in the American zeitgeist for weird books about baseball and this is no exception.

I loved the storyline here and the mashup of ai and automation felt vaguely….foreboding. Don’t need Aunt Nettie knowing all my secrets. The perspective shift felt interesting to me and I was engaged through. A perfect summer read for the train or between innings.

I tried to get into this. I love the world the author created. I had trouble with her characters that didn’t seem to mesh. Oh, and the baseball hook was weak.

Lots of relevant and fun concepts to explore in this book, my favorite being the idea that men and women can be equal competitors in sport.

The author makes an interesting choice in telling the narrative through the eyes of a character slightly removed from those with the emotional impetus to move the plot forward. This allows the reader some space for their own emotions but it also makes the story feel less expectant.
