there were some chapters that really moved me because i could readily relate to them or i just felt connected more generally to the narrative. however, sometimes i felt like i was left wanting more from the chapters? some were very short and did not always make a strong connection between the narrative and the natural phenomenon she was talking about. i feel like i learned some cool things about animals along the way, which i’m happy about. overall, good writing it just didn’t always feel complete.

There were two good books in here that were not really put together very well. The personal memoir was emotional and meaningful, and the natural world essays were informative and passionate, but the extended metaphors that linked the two together often felt bafflingly clumsy. I wanted to like this much more than I did, unfortunately.

Beautiful memoir and bildungsroman that captures the author’s experience as a brown, first-generation American. Uses local animals and plants as a framing device for the different locations each essay is set in as she moves around the United States.
