At it's core its good because Sally Rooney understands that good short stories have to be a little fucked up. So much unspoken desire and overflowing grief in this story. The relationship between the narrator and 'mr salary' is so complicated, messy and uncomfortable. Like the narrator we're left wanting and questioning.

Is there ever a real end to any story? This book has me questioning after that open ending that fundamentally makes a Sally Rooney book..

We pick up stories, finish them & go on with our lives, do these characters just stop existing, do these stories stop evolving?

As soon as I flipped over the last page, my mind & heart agreed on yearning for more, wanting to know the rest of these characters’ lives…

What happened to the attraction simmering between them? Does she go back to Boston & carry on with her life? Do they kiss for a second time? Does he cheat on her? (a million or so possibilities)

There’s so much that we don’t know & will likely never know…

So does any story ever end?
