i think chapters 12-14 were the highlights for me, esp the section titled End Capitalism. parts of this were a little bit repetitive but there was a lot of really interesting information and perspective in this book which is a VERY unique approach to an intersectional inquiry into how humans and marine mammals inhabit the world together.

we used to say "save the whales!" but somehow it feels like in the 21st century capitalism and corporate interest groups and a hundred other things going wrong with the world, made us think that it was Mission Accomplished, but the whales are still dying, the world is still melting, the oceans are boiling, resources are shrinking. we didnt save the whales, shits only gotten worse

I found this kind of writing hard to digest as a book, to read straight through. I think I would've enjoyed it as a picture book or a coffee table book more, but reading it straight through didn't feel as flowing to me, and I found myself skimming to get through it. I think my approach to the book didn't allow a true appreciation for the writing style or content.

if I could go back and do it again (and maybe I will), I would read more slowly and in chunks, and take each reading as an opportunity to reflect and to write inspired, and meditate on its themes.

i'm marking this book as "read" but i don't think i'll ever be done reading it... the lessons contained here are so beautiful & generous ... read slowly, aloud, & again
