I went into this book with high hopes but just couldn't get into the writing. The characters are pretty cookie cutter.

This book had a great start! A super unique and intriguing mystery about what is the true story of this child, is she an alien from a planet called Hetrayeh like she says or human. There are 3 main characters that become a chosen family in the woods of Illinois.

At the start
* Jo: she is a grieving breast cancer survivor. After her mother die and from BC she found out at 25 she also did and had the BRCA so she gene underwent a double mastectomy with no reconstruction and an oophorectomy. Marking her feel like no longer a woman and no long had a mother or the possibility of mothering herself. She is currently working on her ornithology PhD on nesting indigo bunting on edges in rural Illinois.
* Egg man Gabe: he is also 25 and live with his elderly mother as her care taker as well as the care taker of the farm. He suffers from depression, anxiety, agoraphobia, and bullying because he is an oopsie affair baby with the neighbor so his sister hates his guts and wishes he would have died in the woods that one time she ditched him.
* Ursa: a super smart alien made of starlight from outer space and as her schooling requires she must witness five miracles in order to get her PhD of sorts before she can return home.

So Jo lives in the cabin that is Gabe’s actually daddy’s and finds ursa in dirty pajamas and no shoes outside making friends with the start dog. Jo tells her to shew and get but ursa sticks around and tells Jo her “truth” jo obviously doesn’t believe her and tells her to stop lying and leave or she’ll call the police. Also don’t pet the stray and tell it to get lost too, but eventually jo starts to care about the girls well being and take her in but not the dog. At this point I hated Jo. She treats the dog like shit and tells the little girl that she is a liar ever chance she gets. Btw the dog gets shot and killed in the end so all stars removed for that wtf!

Middle

* Jo tried calling the police but the officer made her fell bad about it so she decides to start mothering ursa and stop checking the missing persons websites. It rains suddenly most days to the fam just bonds and Jo pushes everyone around.
* Gabe: having never had kissed a girl or anything before in his life gets kissed and stripped and done pretty much against his will by Jo bc she thinks it’s time for him. He has depression and Jo and ursa sneak in to his house after his evil sister tells them to go to prison or hell she doesn’t care and Jo tells him all he needs is fresh air and he’ll be good as new. Gabe tells her that’s not how depression works but then it does. He also has a beard he grew so he doesn’t look like his bio daddy so Jo straddles him and forcibly shaved his beard so he can “get over it”. Jo-"Please let me. If you hate it, you can grow it back." She kissed him again. "Don't you want to be irresistible to me?"

I wasn't sure how I felt about the book in the beginning and was pleasantly surprised when I finished. It pulled on many of my heartstrings.

Vanderah's writing was touching and a joy to read. I deeply cared about every character. The landscape and scenes where real without being heavy with minute details. I assumed the book was going to end with a strong opinion/conclusion but it didn't. There was enough closure, mystery, and whimsy to be enjoyable.
