.5 for the ending. This series started with book one being really interesting to two pretty uninteresting slog fests.

I don’t even remember what happens, but I do remember that the ending made me so mad it turned me off of the whole series.

Well, Roth really screwed the pooch on this one. While the first two were moderately interesting, the conclusion of the trilogy was pretty much nonsensical. Massive plotholes and an even larger gap in Ms. Roth's understanding of how genetics work made it an extremely frustrating read.

In addition to the poor execution, there was a distinct lack of character development for Tris, who does the same things over and over. Four, on the other hand, devolves into a whiny, needy, scaredy-pants. I don't want to include any spoilers, but let's just say that if I were going to be saddled with that sad sack, I'd choose her path as well. The plot and situations seems forced to get particular character interactions to happen, which makes their dialogue feel forced as well. Supporting characters show up and get killed off frequently, as expected from the first two in the series.

Back to the genetics for a moment- I'm not opposed to some twisting of science when needed for interesting and thought-provoking science fiction. However, Allegiant continually contradicts itself in the science and the science policy it outlines, and I'm sure people outside of the Biological Sciences will catch it too. I'd like to have Roth in my evolution or genetics course for a semester or two, and then have her rewrite the book. It could only improve the quality. On the other hand, maybe she does understand genetics, but wrote herself into a corner and doesn't have the writing chops to dig herself out. The writing itself, however, is of pretty high quality, and the world building was reasonably imaginative in the first two books, so I don't think that's the case.

I kind of hated Tris by the end, but I enjoyed the story and liked the way it ended.

I am so unbelievably disappointed. I was so excited for the finale of this trilogy and it just didn't ever get anywhere near the first two. It took me forever to get through, was slow, and then the ending the was most god awful waste it made me so angry! There was way too much information being thrown at us in this book it left me no time to process and actually feel like it helped me gain any insight whatsoever. I also wasn't a fan of the dual perspective in this book. I liked Four more when the books were left in Tris' perspective.

!!!!!!!!!!!

I just can't even

For all the cynics that hated the ending I think it fits perfectly with the integrity of the characters. I say kudos.
