I found it had good perspective and information but was very repetitive.

Deeply disappointed by the outdated, anti-science fatphobic language/“info.” BIG trigger warning for fat readers and anyone with ED history.
Otherwise overall a useful and interesting book.

Dr. Maté is absolutely worth a read and his book has a wealth of information on addiction, societal stigma, and trauma. However, some parts of In The Realm of Hungry Ghosts are a bit outdated esp cially when it comes to some best practices & inclusive language so a critical eye is important when reading.

Gabor Maté's understanding of addiction -its sources, causes and complexities - is refreshing and eye-opening. He is compassionate and observant, and he's not afraid to turn the tables on himself to closely examine his own addictions. We all have them, to varying degrees, whether it's to drugs, alcohol, sex, food, shopping, work, etc. This book helps to gain an understanding of the hidden forces that drive our behavior, often without our conscious knowledge.
