I learned so much about the flaws of our child welfare system through this book. I struggled through the extremely graphic details of the sexual assault scenes though, which makes me wary to recommend it broadly to others.

This is the rarest of memoirs - a young woman who details the mental and physical struggles she endured to accomplish her dreams and then, once achieved, her greatest feat of all - she dares to tell the world those dreams (Harvard! Google!) didn't resolve her PTSD, she writes that her scars from a traumatic childhood still keep her up at night; she offers analysis to the reader, not gratitude. I mean this as a recommendation - I devoured this book and deeply connected with Emi's urgent, pragmatic want for financial stability. She understood from a very young age that society demands gratitude from whomever it subjectively decides is "worthy" of its limited and conditional help; in order to step out from under that heavy yoke, she needed resources, plain and simple.
