Feels like it's more of an episode than something that really moved the plot further... but I'm going to come back to this later, aren't I

Pet draws her three psychos into the mysterious death of a human this time around. A human found splatted underneath a dumpster near a grocery where then Pen (and JinYeong) end up working.

This installment definitely isn't meant to tie up anything into anything even close to a neat package. We get more hints that Pet isn't exactly a normal human (Zero seems really interested in her relationship to the house).

Pet gets mixed up with some more BehindKin, and the author does a fairly good job of throwing us off the scent of the real bad guy until the end.

There wasn't quite enough JinYeong and Korean for my taste...I guess I want to spend more time with the three psychos (even Athelras) and less time with Pet and other humans working in the grocery. Still, I am going to go buy the next in the series to find out what happens next, and if some of the foreshadowing around Pet, the house and Athelras mean anything.

Pet's story has been very fun so far! It's really refreshing that there's no romance, at least until now.
She is a great main character, she's funny, sarcastic and willing to take risks. And I'm loving the weird sibling like relashipship she's forming with her pshycos, Zero is like a grumpy protective big brother, and Pet and JinYeong are the kind of siblings that keep fighting for silly things and stick out their tongue to each other. I still don't know what to make out of Athelas though, he keeps being creepier that the other two.

Though, in terms of plot, Between Shifts felt a little weaker than the previous book, more like a filling book or a bridge for the third one. If the last book was a solid 4, to me this feels more like a 3,5 though I'll round up to 4 anyway because it was very adictive.

2nd book in W.R. Gingell's City Between urban fantasy series -- this time with werewolves (okay fine, "lycanthropy"). ;) The werewolf plot didn't really make much sense to me, but then again I haven't read much in this genre. Still a fun read and I'll probably be binging the rest of the series soon!

Thoughts:

-I freaked out a bit at the beginning of the audio book because it seemed like the narrator was pronouncing everything weird. However, my ears adjusted to her accent quickly and I enjoyed the way it added more flavor to the story. The characters all sounded spot on. (Especially Pet XD) Also, hearing the Korean! Reading the ebook it translates into "hsknfndodbjdk" in my brain and so actually hearing it was very cool.

- The character dynamics. It's sweet to see Detective Tuatu's concern for Pet and caring about her but also so done with her at the same time. He's the only mostly normal character in the book XD Athelas Drops More Hints, and Zero remains his mysterious self. Jinyeong and Pet have an excellent relationship of mutually annoying each other. So, yeah, the interactions were very enjoyable and I felt like we got to know the characters better.

-The plot! I did figure out a bit of the killer's identity towards the end of the book (yay!) The whole mythos is quite interesting, we learn more about werewolves- excuse me, "shifters"- specifically, but also more of how Behind and Between work.

-Although the main plot threads are resolved, there is somewhat of a cliffhanger/lead in to the next book.

-Also, I just got the pun.

Okay that was really fun. The start was really funny and I enjoyed all the house life banter, I did think it got a little draggy towards the middle but the climax and the end were really good! And that cliffhanger! Bro! I think I’ve gotten into the Between groove. Very excited to read book 3.

Pretty good

I had read reviews that the second book was better than the first. I agree. The pacing is better. I hate cliffhangers but can definitely handle them when the next book is already out. On to the next!
