This book was quite interesting. It points to how the people who fall through the cracks learn to survive and care for the people they are taught to protect by any means possible, even when that leads to them being a part of mind- and body altering atrosities as a part of some sort of government testing experiment.

Both poverty and racism is woven into the story, and how they affect someones lives. A bleak tale of surviving structures that are stacked against you in any way you can, and how the people around you reflect and react to that.

It was easy to recoil at what they were put through during the tests. That they stayed. But if we were truly desperate enough, who are we to say we wouldnt do the same? I think how we judge them for what they endure speaks to us, the reader, and our own position in society. The motivations are often layed out, especially for out main character, would we have left if we had the same responsibilities?

fantastic read. fast paced enough where you can’t set the book down but still leaves so much mystery. you can feel when the protagonist begins to be unreliable. a tense thriller that captures the injustices on black people in america.

Speculative Horror Fiction is not my favorite.... this leans slightly towards sci-fi, but for me it never really commits. This brings up a lot of pertinent issues with the historical data of medical testing that has been done to POC by Scientists/government/doctors/etc. it’s a book that plays into those fears, and highlights how little people care for human beings if they are other in these programs. If you are looking for a nonfiction account of this read “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks”.

For me this book is more a 3.5/5 but I rounded up because it’s not a 3. It’s a book that’s for a lot of discussion points and would be something I’d love to deep dive into at a book club!
