4.5 Wow, now that’s the way to start a trilogy, with a bang! Prince Damon is stripped of his royalty and given as a slave to an enemy prince in a foreign land. He’s forced to hide his identity from the cold, manipulative Laurent, having killed his beloved brother on the battlefield. The relationship between these men is one of hatred. They are enemies, or rather arrogant master to disobedient slave. Damon is a virtuous, hero of a man to Laurent’s vicious cleverness. I can’t wait to see how they grow in their tentative understanding.
The world building is so well done and so well written. Vere is a brutal nation with politics, cruelty, backstabbing and intrigue. Much of this was hard to read, slaves are treated as less than dogs, and rape to a slave is common. However, it works in how the author creates this world.
I’m in this for the long haul as this book is the set up for what’s to come. The book ends as a cue up for book 2. And based off of this book, it’s going to be a doozie.
