Questo secondo volume della serie “Painted Bay” si colloca qualche mese dopo la fine del primo volume, in cui avevamo lasciato Morgan con la proposta di matrimonio a Judah.
Benché “A bordo” abbia protagonisti diversi dal suo predecessore, il mio consiglio è di leggerli in ordine per poter gustare appieno questa splendida serie, altrimenti si perdono tanti rimandi e accenni a cose lette in precedenza. Non credevo che qui si potesse eguagliare la bellezza del primo, ma mi sono felicemente sbagliata e, anche se per motivi differenti, mi ha conquistata e per me merita 5 stelle piene, ma andiamo con ordine…
Mentre Judah e Morgan si godono la loro luna di miele all’estero, la nostra attenzione si sposta su suo fratello Leroy, che avrei tanto voluto prendere a ceffoni nel primo libro, per il suo comportamento a dir poco inqualificabile.
Volete la prova che ci si può innamorare di un personaggio che prima odiavate? Ecco, Leroy Madden servito su un piatto d’argento!
Leroy appare scorbutico, taciturno, insensibile e altri aggettivi non proprio lusinghieri, ma se prima avevamo avuto solo modo di scorgerlo, qui gli entriamo dentro la testa e scopriamo la sua vita incasinata, i suoi segreti, i rancori e il dolore che prova, nonché l’enorme senso del dovere e la devozione che nutre nei confronti della famiglia e dell’attività che gli è capitata fra capo e collo.
La relazione fra fratelli in stile ‘figliol prodigo’ è solo una parte della trama, ma sempre in famiglia si rimane, quando Leroy si ritrova in casa il figlio di Martha, Fox, trasferitosi a Painted Bay per leccarsi le ferite e stare un po’ con la madre.
Martha è come un pezzo acquisito della famiglia, non solo perché ha lavorato per quasi vent’anni con i Madden, ma soprattutto perché è la recente compagna di mamma Madden, Cora.
Leroy non sopporta l’ingerenza di Fox nella sua vita, così come la prevaricazione di Cora, ma è perché nasconde tante cose dentro di sé e Fox smuove qualcosa dentro di lui che ha sempre cercato di evitare, di negarsi, soprattutto per bilanciare la favolosa gaytudine scintillante di suo fratello, che da ragazzino lo metteva a disagio.
La bisessualità di Leroy è un risveglio tardivo ma ben motivato, che mi è perso verosimile.
Anche Fox porta con sé un bagaglio pesante di scelte da fare e il cuore ferito, ma la convivenza forzata con Lee lo porta a mettersi in gioco e contribuisce a creare una bellissima storia che tiene in sospeso sino alla fine.
Accanto ai protagonisti troviamo personaggi già incontrati che contribuiscono ad arricchire la trama con il loro aiuto o i loro problemi.
La storia è coinvolgente, gli argomenti trattati sono tanti e ben gestiti, la traduzione italiana è curata e piacevole. In attesa che le avventure di Painted Bay continuino (il terzo volume è già in preordine con uscita a giugno), io vi consiglio caldamente di leggere questo e recuperare anche il primo.

I wasn't a fan of Leroy in book 1, for very obvious reasons, so I was a bit hesitant when starting this one. And while I can't say I'm totally sold on him yet, he did grow on me. I adored Fox, though. So, in the end, I am glad I gave this book a chance. I'm looking forward to book 3!

Book 2 in the Painted Bay series follows Leroy & Fox. Leroy is the douchey brother of one of Judah from book one, I was apprehensive going into this as I wasn't a Leroy fan after the last book and wasn't sure the author would be able to get me to warm up to his character... spoiler alert.. she didn't, not fully anyway.
If you read book one then you know Leroy has a chip on his shoulder and hasn't always treated the people around him with care or respect, the man clearly has anger & communication issues and that doesn't improve all that much throughout this book. I appreciate what the author tried to do with his sexual awakening but it gave internalised biphobia and Leroy knowing he was verbally and sometimes physically intimidating/abusing people just so he didn't have to deal with his own true feelings didn't sit right with me at all. Judah also rubbed me up the wrong way in this one, there were hints of his self centred behaviour in book one but my God not everything revolves around you, he hated how he weren't accepted for his sexuality and then treated his brother like that? Just no. The storyline with Fox and his cheating ex angered me in all honesty but what I did like about this story was how Leroy & Fox backed each other and gave the other one a safe place to land when things got hard. There was good humour and spice in this as there has been with every Jay Hogan book I've read and Gary Furlongs narration was great as always. I had a feeling going into this it wasn't going to be a favourite because of my feelings towards Leroy and maybe I've judged this too harshly because of those feelings but this didn't work for me the same way book one of this series did. It's enjoyable overall but not my favourite. 🌶🌶

I do like Leroy and Fox more than Judah and Morgan...I think the more I read about Judah the more I don't like him hahah!!

It was hot
What I didn't like:
Judah grated on me on this book. His reaction to Leroy being bisexual was a but hypocritical. Everyone bended over backwards for him and it annoyed me.
