A true classic. My main takeaways:

1. I have SO much beef with Victor Frankenstein. He’s an insufferable narcissist that could have prevented so many deaths.

2. Justine and Clerval deserved better.

There is a reason that this novel is considered a classic piece of literature. When Mary Shelley finished this book at the tender age of 19, she cemented herself as the eternal mother of science fiction. In its pages, she provides for us a bleak and harrowing tale that explores the concepts of loneliness, guilt, and the desire for connection. It requires the reader to ponder whether or not Dr. Frankenstein, his creation, or both of them should be held responsible for the events that transpire. It asks us to define the boundaries of free will and what makes a person human. I am still not sure of my answers to these questions. It is certainly worth the read.

Hateful day when I received life!' I exclaimed in agony. 'Accursed creator! Why did you form a monster so hideous that even you turned from me in disgust? God, in pity, made man beautiful and alluring, after his own image; but my form is a filthy type of yours, more horrid even from the very resemlance. Satan had his companions, fellow-devils, to admire and encourage him; but I am solitary and abhorred.' - Frankenstein
