this one was better than to the lighthouse, it did drag on a bit in the last few chapters but was still good

I usually love VW's work and I did find some passages in here really beautiful. You can definitely see hints of what her work will be like later on.

But this is a mess of a book and it was dreadful to get through.
Ohhh my god i do not care about any of the characters or plot or social commentary. Nothing was done in a peculiary clever way.
I loved the first 100 pages or so, I was analyzing and annotating the book like crazy, loved so many ideas and generally thought this could be like a 4-5 star read.
I dont even know how it happened, but the story really really went downhill. It felt like all those smart ideas about the past, traditions, feminism, privilege and empowerement as well as the theme of night and day were pushed aside for some insufferable low stakes low quality romance plotline.
Was i reading VW or watching some low budget hallmark movie??

It was just one big bleh of a book with some really amazing passages sprinkeled in between and I am so disappointed and mad.
