Even though it took me forever to finish this book I am looking forward to bookclub discussion. I think the characters were at times very relatable but unlikable for the most part. The prose was witty but occasionally felt more like an essay on marriage/divorce than a novel. So much to discuss

Fleiahman is in trouble. He’s in his 40s and his social climbing wife has left him with his two young children. Where is she? Toby copes with this by continuing to work enjoy his Tinder-like dating app and reaching out to old friends. The story centers around that summer she was gone as told by a college friend of Toby’s.

I wanted to love this book. I loved the last two pages and I liked the rest. The story is told in page long texts blocks and no chapters which made me feel like I had to keep barreling forward at high speed. Maybe that was intentional but it didn’t work for me. I felt rushed and couldn’t take it all in.

I was torn between 3 and 4 stars. On one hand this book is thought provoking and deals with lots of raw emotions and difficult, yet real life problems. On another there were times it felt childish and drawn out. I think overall I value the book for dealing with the tough questions and showing the story and situations from multiple character’s perspectives.
